A proposed reservoir in the Fens

A new destination for Fenland

Our vision for the project goes beyond securing a sustainable water supply. We want to create a place where people, nature and water come together.

This means creating space for wildlife, such as wetlands, and enabling new recreational and educational facilities for people to explore. It also means creating new jobs and providing opportunities for local businesses and tourism.

Connected to communities

The reservoir will be on the doorstep of nearby communities, with access points around the site. Those living in the nearby villages will easily be able to reach the site on foot, by bike or horse, or within a few minutes’ drive if they prefer.

It will also be within easy reach of larger towns and cities, with the site less than 30 minutes’ drive from Ely and Huntingdon, and around 45 minutes from Peterborough and Cambridge.

This makes the reservoir well placed to become a new destination for days out and time spent by the water for communities across Fenland and the wider area.

Supporting health and recreation

We’re designing the reservoir to be an exciting new destination for the Fens, with options for walkers, cyclists, horse riders, water sports users and areas for relaxing by the water.

With different zones designed for people and nature, and multiple visitor centres, we’re designing it to offer memorable days out and accessible experiences for nearby communities and visitors.

Protecting nature

We’re making sure that the reservoir will help protect and restore some of our most precious environments, as well as creating new space for wildlife, such as wetlands, alongside natural places for people to explore.

Inspired by the Fenland landscape, our proposals for new wetland habitats and species-specific enhancements will support Fenland wildlife and help nature thrive.

Reducing pressure on chalk streams

By creating a new water resource for the region, the proposed reservoir would help reduce pressure on precious natural water sources, including vulnerable chalk streams, supporting their long-term protection and recovery.

Creating local economic opportunities

Our proposals could help boost local prosperity by creating jobs, supporting skills and opening up opportunities for businesses and suppliers.

From construction through to operation, the project has the potential to bring investment, training and long-term economic benefits to the area.

Supporting young people

We’re working with local schools and colleges, delivering classroom sessions, assemblies, career activities and curriculum-linked resources that have already reached hundreds of students.

The reservoir can help open doors to future careers, and we’ll soon also be inviting local students to join the new Young Ambassador Forum to give young people insight into future career opportunities.

It will help ensure communities can continue to grow sustainably while protecting the environment for future generations.
