A proposed reservoir in the Fens

Our work to date

Selecting a site for the reservoir

For our initial phase of public consultation in 2022, we outlined the preferred site for the reservoir, and identified potential opportunities for recreation and the environment. This was the result of a thorough site selection process which, ensured the site was suitable for a reservoir, and sought to minimise impacts on nearby areas and communities.

A bold vision for the reservoir and its connecting infrastructure

For our phase two consultation in spring/summer 2024, we outlined the emerging design for the reservoir, which included our early proposals for recreation, environment and access.

We also introduced our early thinking on the reservoir’s associated water infrastructure, including the water sources used to fill it, treatment works, pipelines, pumping stations and how the water would eventually reach our supply network.

We completed a multi-stage assessment to identify the preferred locations for the associated water infrastructure. These locations were assessed against a range of criteria including what construction of the infrastructure would involve, natural and historic environment features and relevant planning designations. You can read more about this process in our Options Appraisal Report.

Our latest proposals

Our phase three consultation was open from 15 October 2025 to 10 December 2025

We presented our latest proposals for a new reservoir in the Fens, as well as its connecting infrastructure. This was our third phase of consultation in a multi-phase approach, and once again we welcomed feedback from the public and other stakeholders.

Our phase three proposals included:

  • Updated proposals for the reservoir design including how it could feature in the landscape and connect to nearby communities, and the features it could include for people and nature.
  • Updated proposals for the raw water and treated water infrastructure we would need to transfer water to the reservoir, treat it, and supply it to Anglian Water and Cambridge Water customers.
  • Information on how we could deliver the project including early thinking on construction and transport options.
  • Information on our approach to the environment including how we’re assessing the project’s potential impacts, what we’ve learned to date, and how we propose to reduce and manage any impacts during both construction and operation.
  • Early plans on providing power for the reservoir including our current proposals for using renewable technology.

The feedback provided during our phase three consultation played a valuable role in helping us shape these proposals further.
